Billy Joel Turns Back Time in Spectacular ‘Turn the Lights Back On’ Music Video

Renowned musician Billy Joel has taken fans on a mesmerizing journey through the decades in his latest music video, “Turn the Lights Back On.” Released on Friday, the video showcases Joel’s transformation from his present-day self to the iconic figures of the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, thanks to groundbreaking AI technology from Deep Voodoo.

The visually stunning video begins with Joel performing “Famous Last Words,” the closing track from his 1993 album “River of Dreams,” on an empty theater stage. As the song progresses, the 74-year-old singer seamlessly transitions into his younger selves, capturing the essence of each decade. From the shaggy-haired ’70s Piano Man to the leather-jacketed ’80s Storm Front Joel and the sunglasses-clad ’90s River of Dreams Joel, the video offers a photorealistic trip down memory lane.

The impressive visual effects in the video were made possible by Deep Voodoo, an entertainment-focused AI startup launched in 2022 by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of “South Park.” Using deepfake technology, the same used by rapper Kendrick Lamar in his 2022 video, Joel’s younger versions are remarkably realistic, capturing the nuances of each era with uncanny accuracy.

“Turn the Lights Back On” marks Joel’s first new song in 17 years, and its success is evident as he makes a triumphant return to the Billboard Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary charts. The song, co-written by Joel, Freddy Wexler, Arthur Bacon, and Wayne Hector, has resonated with audiences, reaching No. 1 on the Classic Rock chart and No. 8 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

Joel premiered the song live at the Grammys, where his leather jacket harkened back to his ’80s Storm Front days. The singer, known for hits like “Piano Man” and “Uptown Girl,” is gearing up for several significant milestones, including his 100th show at Madison Square Garden, a special CBS concert airing on April 14, and his 75th birthday on May 9. Furthermore, Joel will celebrate his 150th show at the Garden on July 25, concluding his record-breaking residency and paving the way for a tour with Sting and Rod Stewart.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Joel reflected on his changing relationship with songwriting, expressing a newfound sense of joy and freedom. He emphasized that the creative process is no longer burdened by worries about chart performance or critics’ opinions, allowing him to simply enjoy the act of singing and creating music.

Billy Joel’s “Turn the Lights Back On” music video is a testament to the enduring legacy of a musical icon. The use of cutting-edge AI technology not only provides a visually captivating experience but also highlights Joel’s ability to evolve with the times while staying true to his timeless sound. As fans eagerly anticipate further milestones and performances, Joel’s resurgence in the music scene proves that his talent remains as vibrant as ever.
