Fever vs. Mercury: Caitlin Clark and Indiana Fever Overcome Deficit to Defeat Phoenix Mercury 88-82

The Indiana Fever (8-12) showcased their resilience and determination as they overcame a 15-point deficit to secure an 88-82 victory against the Phoenix Mercury (9-9) on Sunday at the Footprint Center. This thrilling game marked Indiana’s first win against Phoenix this season, propelled by a strong second-half performance and standout contributions from multiple players.

The Fever trailed 53-38 early in the third quarter but managed to turn the game around with a dominant 25-9 run in the second half. They outscored the Mercury 29-15 in the third quarter, taking control and never looking back. The Fever’s defense tightened, and their offense clicked, leading to a stunning comeback victory.

Rookie sensation Caitlin Clark had a significant impact on the game, even though she struggled with her shooting. Clark scored 15 points on 4-of-14 shooting, including 2-of-10 from beyond the arc. Despite the tough shooting night, she contributed in other ways, recording 12 assists and nine rebounds, nearly achieving the first triple-double by a WNBA rookie in history.

Clark’s playmaking was crucial in the Fever’s comeback, as she orchestrated the offense and found her teammates for open shots. Her chemistry with second-year forward Aliyah Boston was evident, with Boston leading the team with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting, eight rebounds, and four assists.

The Fever had five players scoring in double figures for the second consecutive game. Kelsey Mitchell added 16 points, including clutch three-pointers that helped secure the lead. Rookie forward NaLyssa Smith was a force on the boards, grabbing a season-high 15 rebounds and contributing 12 points. Temi Fagbenle provided a spark off the bench with 10 points in her second game back from injury.

Mitchell’s timely shooting, especially two back-to-back three-pointers in the third quarter, was instrumental in shifting the momentum in favor of the Fever. She also made crucial free throws in the closing seconds to seal the victory.

For the Phoenix Mercury, veteran guard Diana Taurasi and center Brittney Griner led the charge. Griner scored a game-high 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting, along with six rebounds and two assists. Taurasi, a 20-year WNBA veteran, added 19 points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

Despite their efforts, the Mercury couldn’t hold off the Fever’s relentless attack in the second half. Phoenix struggled to find their rhythm offensively in the latter part of the game, scoring only 33 points in the second half compared to Indiana’s 50.
