In a passionate response on social media, actress Jennifer Aniston has taken a stand against J.D. Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate for the upcoming 2024 election, over resurfaced comments he made in 2021. Vance, in an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, referred to several Democratic leaders, including Vice President Kamala Harris, as “childless cat ladies” and questioned their stake in the country’s future due to their lack of biological children.
Aniston, who has been vocal about her own struggles with fertility, did not hold back in her criticism. She shared a screenshot of the interview clip on her Instagram Story, expressing her disbelief at Vance’s remarks coming from a potential Vice President. “I truly can’t believe this is coming from a potential VP of The United States,” Aniston wrote. “All I can say is … Mr. Vance, I pray that your daughter is fortunate enough to bear children of her own one day. I hope she will not need to turn to IVF as a second option. Because you are trying to take that away from her, too.”
Vance’s comments originally made headlines in July 2021 when he accused Harris, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of not having a direct stake in the country because they did not have children of their own. His statements have been widely criticized for their insensitivity and inaccuracy, as both Harris and Buttigieg do have children through their respective familial arrangements.
Aniston’s reaction stems from her personal journey with fertility issues. In a 2022 interview with Allure magazine, she revealed her long struggle with trying to conceive, including multiple rounds of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. Aniston described her attempts to get pregnant in her 30s and 40s as a “challenging road” filled with various treatments and methods. “I was trying to get pregnant. It was a challenging road for me, the baby-making road,” she shared. “All the years and years and years of speculation… It was really hard. I was going through IVF, drinking Chinese teas, you name it. I was throwing everything at it.”
The “Friends” star also expressed regret over not having been advised to freeze her eggs earlier in life. “I would’ve given anything if someone had said to me, ‘Freeze your eggs. Do yourself a favor.’ You just don’t think it. So here I am today. The ship has sailed.” Despite the challenges, Aniston has made peace with her situation, though she remains protective of her personal story due to the intense media scrutiny she has faced over the years.
Aniston’s post also highlighted Vance’s political stance on reproductive rights, noting his opposition to the Right to IVF Act, which sought to protect access to IVF services nationwide. In June, Vance joined other Senate Republicans in voting down the bill that would have made these procedures more affordable and accessible.
The actress’s comments have sparked a broader conversation about reproductive rights and the societal pressures on women regarding motherhood. In her 2016 essay for the Huffington Post, Aniston addressed the relentless tabloid speculation about her personal life, emphasizing that a woman’s worth is not determined by her marital or maternal status. “Here’s where I come out on this topic: We are complete with or without a mate, with or without a child,” she wrote. “We get to decide for ourselves what is beautiful when it comes to our bodies. That decision is ours and ours alone.”
Aniston’s public stance against Vance’s remarks has garnered support from various corners, including celebrities and political commentators who have praised her for speaking out. Her personal journey and advocacy underscore the importance of supporting women’s reproductive rights and respecting individual choices, regardless of societal expectations.
