Minnesota Senator Nicole Mitchell Arrested for Attempted Burglary Over Father’s Ashes
Minnesota State Senator Nicole Mitchell has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree burglary after attempting to break into her stepmother’s home in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. The arrest, which occurred early Monday morning, has sent ripples through the political landscape of Minnesota and raised questions about Mitchell’s conduct and personal struggles.
According to reports, Mitchell, a Democratic senator representing Woodbury, was apprehended by police after a homeowner reported an active burglary in progress. Mitchell allegedly entered the residence in an attempt to retrieve sentimental items belonging to her late father, including his ashes. The complaint filed against her reveals that Mitchell expressed frustration to her stepmother, stating, “I was just trying to get a couple of my dad’s things because you wouldn’t talk to me anymore.”
The incident sheds light on a deeply personal and fraught relationship between Mitchell and her stepmother, which her attorney, Bruce Ringstrom Sr., attributes to age-related issues exacerbating an already fractured dynamic. Mitchell’s father passed away in March 2023, leaving behind a family grappling with grief and internal strife.
While Mitchell has denied stealing any items, she admitted to entering the house through a basement window, citing her stepmother’s refusal to communicate with her as the impetus for her actions. However, her stepmother has expressed fear of Mitchell and contested Mitchell’s claims, stating that she had sent her a miniature container with some of her late husband’s ashes.
In response to the allegations, Senate Republicans have called for Mitchell’s resignation, labeling her behavior as unbecoming of a legislator. Conversely, Democratic Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy has voiced support for due process, emphasizing Mitchell’s right to a full defense in court. With just under four weeks left in the legislative session, Mitchell’s absence could significantly impact the Senate’s ability to pass legislation, given the slim one-seat majority held by Democrats.
